A number missing a piece of data comes out flagged, not pretty

It is the kind of decision you do not see in a demo and that decides whether you can trust a dashboard.
When a piece of data is missing to work out an indicator properly — the net on an export, say — the system flags it as provisional. It does not hide it, it does not estimate it and it does not draw it as though it were complete. It comes out with its warning on top.
The alternative is what almost all software does: show the number anyway. And a number that looks firm when it is not is not incomplete data, it is false data — with the aggravating detail that you have already taken the decision by the time you find out.
It is the same rule we apply to what we publish about ourselves: if it is not measured, it does not go out as though it were.
